Artist Statement
I’m passionate about drawing and painting, and learning about the natural world around me. My paintings are based on my experiences and what I see: patterns of light on the snow while backcountry skiing, encounters with wildlife while hiking, sunrise over a mountain lake while camping, flowers in my garden or views of the nearby park. Many of my paintings are of my travels in wild places. I hope to communicate the value of protecting these incredible places and use my art to give back to the wild that has given so much to me. My sketchbook is usually in my pack so I can practice drawing whatever subject presents itself. I am drawn to painting en plein air – on location in the outdoors – and find it challenging but essential to growing as an artist and a student of nature. I am profoundly grateful to live in Canada, with its wildlife and protected wilderness areas, and to be have the freedom to visit these special places.
Biography
Julia Keenliside is an emerging artist from Edmonton, Alberta who has been hiking, climbing, skiing and biking around western Canada for the past three decades. After a career as a veterinarian she switched to creating full time art in 2021. She has been mentored by Oksana Zhelisko at the Artlelier Studio/Paint Spot and Mastrius Artist Mentorship Program (online). Julia paints her travels in oil, watercolour and gouache. She carries a sketchbook on every trip and particularly enjoys painting on location. Julia’s paintings often depict the landscapes of western Canada, although she also enjoys doing portrait commissions of both pets and people. Her skiing, hiking and cycling companions also make appearances in her work, highlighting our need for connection with wild places.
Julia is a supporting member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and is participating in her first shows in 2025.
