Artist Statement
Life's journey often takes us through unexpected challenges, yet it is our response to these trials that defines our true strength. My path from adversity to becoming a Fine Artist and now, a Signature Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists showcases the extraordinary power of determination, resilience, and creativity.

In my twenties, a rare brain tumor diagnosis, and multiple chronic health disorders dramatically altered my life's course. Despite these immense challenges, I emerged from brain surgery with a new purpose and a deep commitment to healing.

Guided by the unwavering support of my husband, now caregiver, I immersed myself in art as a means of therapy and self-expression. What initially began as Motor and Cognitive Therapy quickly blossomed into a profound passion for the arts, leading me to discover my innate talent as an Archival Ink Fine Artist.

Through unwavering dedication, I have not only refined my artistic skills but have also cultivated a distinct voice within the art world. Today, my original artworks grace collectors worldwide, serving as a testament to the transformative power of art in overcoming adversity.

In addition to my artistic journey, I have embraced American Sign Language (ASL) as a non-verbal person and have found it to be a profound form of communication post-surgery. ASL has become an integral part of my identity and artistic expression, highlighting the remarkable adaptability of the human spirit.

I am deeply grateful for the invaluable support and mentorship I have received along this transformative journey, particularly from esteemed Traditional Classical Artist Mark Anthony (https://markanthonystudio.com/) whose friendship and guidance have profoundly influenced my artistic growth.
Biography
Lasha Barbosa is a remarkable fine artist born in Whitehorse, Yukon, whose life and work embody resilience, creativity, beauty, and a playful, humorous perspective. A Signature (SFCA) Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (Vancouver Head Office Chapter) and a sitting Board Member of the Edmonton Chapter, she has remained a devoted Northern Canadian outdoorswoman her entire life.

Her delicate archival ink masterpieces on cotton paper are inspired by the animals, forests, foliage, and untamed beauty of the North—reflecting the profound healing power of nature that has guided her through life’s greatest challenges. In her twenties, Lasha faced a rare brain tumor diagnosis and multiple chronic health disorders, which dramatically altered her path. Emerging from brain surgery with renewed purpose, she embraced art as a form of therapy and self-expression, discovering an innate talent that quickly blossomed into a full-time passion. What began as motor and cognitive rehabilitation evolved into a distinctive artistic voice, with her original works now cherished by collectors worldwide.

Communicating through American Sign Language (ASL) as a non-verbal person, Lasha weaves her Northern heritage and personal experiences into every composition. Her graceful, often whimsical and anthropomorphic portrayals of wildlife celebrate the adaptability of the human spirit while transcending barriers of language and circumstance. Far from the urban art scene, her deep connection to the great outdoors—where she finds solace, inspiration, and humor—infuses her art with an authentic Northern Canadian spirit.

Beyond her studio practice, Lasha is dedicated to fostering inclusivity and inspiration. She offers exclusive, small-group art classes conducted entirely in ASL, designed for accessibility and personalized engagement. Through her ASL public speaking engagements, she shares her journey of resilience, emphasizing how the healing power of nature and a touch of humor fuel her creativity and empower others to embrace their own paths with courage and levity. Due to ongoing health considerations, Lasha selectively accepts these opportunities, making each event a rare and transformative experience.Lasha’s work and story stand as a powerful testament to the ability of art and nature to heal, connect, and inspire. Her creations invite viewers into a world where adversity is transformed into masterpieces of resilience, grace, and whimsical beauty.
